DP Review of New Phone with Zeiss Lens
The above words (and link) sum up the point of the is post. What many professional photographers have appreciated for a long time was that there was an level of exclusivity associated with the tools of their profession. Carl Zeiss is a name that has a long history in producing some of the best optics for photography available. With quality comes a price and the same holds true for Zeiss lenses available for popular inter-changeable lens cameras. Noteworthy is that these lenses are still of the manual focus variety but remained something coveted by photographers looking for the sharpest photographs.
Now Zeiss has moved into a new areas (so to speak). Working with Nokia to the mobile phone equipment manufacturer they are packing "Zeiss branded optics into a mobile phone. Does this mean that the optics in the phone is of equivalent quality as what can be obtained for the traditional SLR camera? Does this represent the potential of the "cell phone" being considered a serious photography capture device? Frankly the answer these questions and many more are beyond any one person. What it does represent is the recognition of a market. Zeiss appreciates that more photographs are being taken by mobile phones than ever. To ignore this growing market would be foolish for any company producing photographic equipment.
